Emergency Forest Restoration Program
The Emergency Forest Restoration Program is administered by the Farm Service Agency to help the owners of non-industrial private forests restore the health of forest land damaged by natural disasters.
A Farm Service Agency county committee will inspect damage to determine if land meets the following eligibility requirements:
- The land must be located in a county or portion of a county approved for the program.
- The land must be owned by a private individual, group, association, corporation or other private legal entity that has decision making authority for the land.
- The land must not be used for business purposes.
- The land must have suffered forest damage from a natural disaster that left untreated would impair or endanger it and materially affect its future use.
- The land must have tree cover, or have had it before the natural disaster.
- The land must be suitable for the growing of trees.
Funding for the program is determined by Congress. Up to 75% of the cost to implement restoration practices can be provided; with the final amount determined by the Farm Service Agency committee reviewing the application. The committee may approve applications up to $50,000. Amounts ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 require approval from a separate state committee.
